Rascal was the first one through door when Parker and Amy arrived.
âMeet my birthday present!â Amy exclaimed. âHis name is Rascal. I hope itâs okay for him to come inside.â
âOf course it is,â Steph said.
While Amy oohed and ahhed over the decorations, Rascal took it upon himself to meet and greet all the humans. He sniffed everythingâfeet, legs, butts, crotches. He saved Rosa for last. With his tail wagging a hundred miles a minute, he ran over to Rosa, sniffed her wheels, then he gently put his paw on her leg and his head in her lap.
âI think he likes me,â Rosa said. She rubbed his silky ears.
Rascalâs heavy tail thumped the hardwood floor.
âSure he does,â Amy said. âHe knows good people when he sees them.â
âHeâs awful sweet for such an ugly hound,â Bernie observed.
âIsnât that what your last girlfriend said about you?â Millie teased.
Bernie guffawed. âIâm not all that sweet.â
Rosa asked, âWhereâd you get him?â
âI got him at the shelter,â Parker said. âThey had him scheduled forâ¦,â she continued in a whisper, âyou know.â
Rosa stroked his head. âHeâs a nice dog.â She lifted Rascalâs head and looked into his big, brown eyes. âYouâre a good boy, arenât you?â In answer, Rascal licked her face.
Rosa laughed and wiped off the dog slobber with her sleeve.
âSorry about that. He loves to kiss people,â Amy said, apologetically.
âYeah, he kisses like my first girlfriend,â Rosa said.
Rascal moved to the coffee table of presents and stuck his nose up to each and every one. Parker grabbed his collar and forced him away from the gifts. âSorry if we were late,â Parker said. âWe had to stop at PetSmart and get him a few things.â
âUh, yeah, like a lot of things. He is now well-equipped,â Amy said. âI even got these cute little poopy bags.â Amy pulled a bright yellow plastic bag out of her back pocket. âIt has little paw prints on it.â
âItâs what lesbians do,â Parker said. âWe donât have kids, so we adopt fur kids.â
Millie joked, âJust be sure to keep the dog poop away from Mabel. You know how she loves to torment Edna with dog poop.â
âWhere is Mabel anyway?â Amy asked.
âClara and Mabel will be over as soon as they finish up with the bake sale,â Millie said.
âWhat bake sale?â Steph asked.
Millie explained, âWe had to think of a way to raise money to buy more ammo. We almost did a car wash, but the thought of a bunch of eighty-year-old women trotting around in bikinis didnât seem wise. So, we did a bake sale instead.â
âWait. Back up a minute,â Rosa said. âYouâre raising money for what?â
âAmmo,â Millie said. âYou know, bullets. For our neighborhood watch group, Millieâs Militia. None of us realized that ammo was so expensive. Did you know that it costs twenty dollars for fifty rounds? And thatâs not even for the hollow points. Howâs a senior citizen on social security supposed to be able to afford ammo these days?â Millie shook her head in disgust.
âI should petition the NRA,â Bernie said.
