Chapter Twelve

The undercurrent was strong, pulling us under into a vortex as we swirled around in a mess of arms and fins. Erik grabbed my hand first before Aladdin reached for the other. Then, together, they found Philip and Adam, and as a group, we swam to the surface gasping for air.

“We’re definitely close. Rumor was that the sea king created riptides and undercurrents like that to surround his kingdom and protect it against any unwanted visitors. We have to go through it together, but as mermaids, we should be able to get through it.”

“Are you sure about this Erik,” Adam said, shaking his head to toss his long hair out of his face. “What happens if we try to go through that and get separated?”

“Just hold on to each other. It’ll be fine. I’m sure this is it.”

“If you have any other ideas, Adam, by all means, now’s the time to speak.” Philip looked over at him, but the dark prince had nothing. “Alright, let’s do this. No one lose their grip on Serina.”

“I am not that precious,” I muttered, feeling embarrassed by this extra care I seemed to get. “Also, I’m fully capable of taking care of myself.”

“We know that. But you are precious to us.” Aladdin said before nodding at Erik, tightening his grip almost painfully around my hand. We ducked back under the waves and began pushing ourselves through the water and the resistance that met us.

Even as we pushed and fought my muscles began to protest, wanting to turn back to relieve themselves. I wasn’t sure I would get through, and then just as I got to the other side, it felt like we had broken through a wall, and suddenly, everything was so much easier.

Floating there for a moment, I panted as I tried to catch my breath. The boys were doing the same. It felt like I had just gone through a war even though I had done nothing. Did everyone who went through that wall of water feel that way?

“You there.” Two mermen appeared, both holding tridents as they leveled them with our faces and pressed them ahead toward our necks. “Intruders on the southern wall. We have been breached.” He seemed to speak to his partner, but it wasn’t his partner who replied. He stared distantly past us and then nodded his head as if someone had said something, “they have fins, but I don’t recognize them.”

“State your purpose,” his partner said, pushing his trident closer to my neck, and the boys bristled behind me.

“We’re from the Academy. I believe the sea king sent his daughter there. We’re ambassadors of the school, sent to speak with him.” I pushed the trident away from my skin and then glanced over my shoulder at the boys to make sure they wouldn’t do anything stupid in some attempt to protect me.

“They say they’re here to see the king. Ambassadors from the human academy.” There was another long pause as the guard seemed to wait and listen to the invisible voice that was talking to him.
