Chapter 12

Sunday, the final day of the Twin Forks rodeo dawned bright and beautiful. It would prove to be a fateful September day. Casey awoke early. He showered, dressed and then walked out to the corral where Buster was nosing into fresh hay. "Morning, Buster, you fine looking steed. Are you ready to race today?" Casey questioned. Buster kept eating and didn't pay any attention to Casey. "Well, if you won't answer me, then point in the direction of where your pretty little owner is."

Casey heard giggling and turned to see Ann walking up with Buster's halter in her hand. "Buster is a great horse, but the last I heard, he hadn't learned how to talk," she said.

"Never underestimate the power of a good horse," Casey said, and laughed.

"Annie, I feel like I could ride the worst demon in the world today. Have you ever seen a better morning?" Casey asked Ann.

"I'm glad to see you in such high spirits. I'd bet a bucket of oats that you'll win easy today, Casey," Ann said and smiled.

"I do feel good and you know attitude means a lot on how you perform. You gotta' feel positive. Remember that and maybe you'll win today," Casey said.

"Yes sir, I will. Now, can you give me a hand getting Buster loaded?" Ann asked.

"Sure thing, we don't want to be late getting back to town. Let's get going and I'll buy you breakfast somewhere," Casey said.

They loaded Buster into the trailer and Casey jumped into the driver's seat. Ann got in and they started for town. Casey drove slowly. When they reached the outskirts of Twin Forks, they saw Johnson's truck parked in front of a cafe. Casey pulled over and parked. Ann checked Buster, and then followed Casey inside.

It looked like "Old Cronies" day in the restaurant. Johnson and Bill sat surrounded by a lot of their old friends. Sam and Duke were there and other people whom Ann didn't immediately recognize. She saw her friends, Beth and Jill, and waved. There were several other competitors sitting around the small cafe and it was obvious that this restaurant was a favorite spot for the rodeo contestants. Everyone was in a cheerful mood and the chatter was friendly and light.

Bill stood up and waved to Casey when he saw them walk in. The group quickly made room at the table for Ann and Casey. Johnson smiled at his two Bent Bar riders and introduced them to the people sitting around their table. "Here are the two that Bill and I have been bragging about. Casey here sticks on a bronc like a fly on a piece of new flypaper and this young lady is on her way to becoming one of the top barrel racers and, I might add, trainers in the state," Johnson proudly said. Everyone introduced themselves. Ann and Casey were shy at first, but soon felt right at home with their new acquaintances.

Duke looked fondly at Ann and said, "Ann doesn't like to
