CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

As Duke waited for Mandy to come home and Agent Ford to arrive, time seemed to move at a snail’s pace. Unable to concentrate, he ambled into the kitchen and brewed a fresh pot of coffee, then set cream, sugar, and three mugs on the table. He was just setting down a plate of muffins when he heard Mandy’s car roll up the driveway, and he hurried out to meet her.

“Come here, you,” he said earnestly, striding up as she stepped from the car.

“This is all so unbelievable,” she exclaimed as he hugged her. “What should we do?”

“That’s up to the agent,” he replied as his phone chimed. ”Hold on,” he muttered, stepping back and lifting it from his pocket. “It’s the guard from the front gate. Hello?”

“Mr. Elwood, are you expecting a Mr. Brian Ford?”

“Yes, sorry, I should have let you know.”

“No problem, Sir.”

“Agent Ford is here,” Duke said solemnly, ending the call. “Let’s wait for him inside. I feel weird standing out here.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“I wonder what he’s going to tell us,” she said as they walked into the house. “I guess we’ll find out soon enough.”
