“That horse has got to go!” Mel Ramble's voice rang out, “I don't care what I paid for it or anything else for that matter. It's got to go!”

Lucy's voice was calmer and quieter, yet firm, “Mel, she has gotten so attached to him and if you took him away from her now, especially after you got him for her, it would just crush her.”

Mel spoke. “She's already crushed.” His voice was sarcastic, yet serious. “Lucy, he is going and that's all there is to it. For a horse to come crashing down on some poor, helpless little girl is too much and is not fit for anyone to have. I'm taking him to the glue factory first thing tomorrow morning. And Lucy, nothin's gonna stop me!”

Lucy's voice was still calm, “Mel, you said yourself that's not how it happened. You didn't give the girl a chance. Don't you think she even deserves that? That horse means so much to her and you'll just be hurting her worse if you take him away from her now.”

“One could even say it was your fault, Lucy,” Mel's voice was getting louder and angrier. “After all, you're the one that let her go out and try to work with a horse that has hardly seen a human being in its life, most likely. You know you should have let me at least green break and teach it the basics for Paula, then she could have taken it from there.”

At this, Lucy couldn't stand it any longer and ran outside to the truck, tears coming to her eyes. She headed straight for the hospital, driving almost blindly. Almost an hour later, she pulled into the parking lot of the hospital where Paula was being treated. She walked into the lobby and gave some information at the desk, where she was told to go to room 375.

When she reached the closed door, she heard a TV and some giggling coming from inside the room. Slowly, she knocked on the door.

“Who is it?” called a voice from inside. It was Paula.

“Mommy,” Lucy replied, her voice a bit shaky from what she had to tell her daughter.

“Oh!” called the excited voice, “Come in!”

Lucy entered the room, still half in a daze. Then, realizing Paula would notice something was wrong, she snapped herself out of it and went over and sat down on the edge of the bed. She spoke, trying her hardest to sound natural, “How do you feel, honey?”

Paula replied, her voice happy, “Oh, just fine, but, would you mind telling me what happened?”

“Well, Paula,” Lucy began slowly, “no one was there except you so we don't really know, but your daddy took a look after the ambulance left. From what he saw, he said that he doesn't think that Dusty himself hit you. He thinks he reared up and knocked that loose beam that Al was supposed to fix on top of you, because it was lying a couple feet from where you were.”

“Well, I
