Running the fingers of one hand through his still-damp hair, Zane slumped down in his cushioned seat at the end of the couch. He usually showered in the morning before he left for work, but after such an eventful night, warm water and fresh soap to cleanse away the stress of the day was exactly what he’d needed. As Zane glanced to the closed door across from the second bedroom, he caught the faint scent of fruity shampoo.

Guilt over doubting Amelia when he’d first seen the messages on Ben Storey’s phone still nibbled at the back of Zane’s mind. On the trip to her apartment, the sense of remorse had been so thorough that he’d spent the duration searching for a suitable apology.

Hey, I know you’re pretty much my only friend in this city. Sorry I thought you were a secret scumbag who had an affair with a father of two. Sorry my stupid caveman brain had me convinced we were a thing just because we had a moment that one time. We good?

He snorted and rubbed his forehead. There were times, however infrequent, when honesty was not the best policy. Zane wasn’t one to rush to judgment often, but he’d let his emotions get the better of him. In a normal case, he’d be disappointed in himself. However, this went beyond the norm, and his so-called “decision” had cast his friend in a truly negative light. Ashamed couldn’t accurately describe how low he felt.

He couldn’t be sure how long his thoughts wandered down the bizarre road of introspection and guilt. When he returned to the present, golden light from the bathroom doorway fell along the dark hardwood floor.

As a familiar longhaired calico trotted into the hall, he almost had to do a double take. Zane hadn’t lived with a pet since high school, and the sight of a cat in his place was as foreign as a woman showering in his spare bathroom. Any woman, other than a relative, who showered in his apartment was also sleeping in his bed.

“Dammit, Hup.” Amelia emerged just after her cat.

Zane pushed himself to sit straight as she came into view. Her dark, caramel-tipped hair hung in long, ropy strands, and damp splotches darkened the back of her blue t-shirt. A pair of black running shorts revealed more of her shapely legs than he’d seen since their undercover venture to a nightclub called Evoked.

Before his eyes could linger, he forced himself to look at Hup.

Flattening her orange and black ears, Hup increased her pace until she was at the edge of the coffee table. At the lessened distance, Zane noticed the elastic hair tie in the cat’s mouth.

“Your cat steals your stuff?” With a quick glance to Amelia, he hunched forward and extended a hand toward Hup. “C’mere, kitty. Give me that.”

Tail swishing back and forth, Hup darted back to Amelia.

Amelia blew a raspberry as the calico disappeared into the gloom of the bedroom. “She can be a real dick.”

The deadpan way Amelia had delivered the insult sent Zane into a fit of laughter.
