CHAPTER 21

“Hey, I thought we should get together and touch base,” Reid said, even though he hated being the one to reach out. “You know, compare notes.”

“Sure,” came the smooth reply. “You wanna meet up now?”

“Why not?”

Reid took the thirty-minute drive to the FBI offices in Miramar to think about the various aspects of this case. Usually, there was some sort of incremental progress during an investigation, like every new clue they found slotted into the overall puzzle making the picture clearer, but this was nothing like that. There were so many differing threads, he didn’t know which were real and which were dead ends.

Hector was still on the run and the evidence suggested he’d killed both Vince and Pedro, but then what was Del Gatto’s role in the whole thing? It was his yacht that had washed up with the diamonds and Hector had skippered for him, so logically, one would assume they were in on it together. Could he believe Del Gatto had nothing to do with it? Was it possible Hector had orchestrated the smuggling operation without his boss's knowledge?

He gazed out of the window at the meticulously manicured gardens leading up the imposing glass and concrete fortress that was the new FBI headquarters. It was very impressive. Hopefully, the two FBI agents could shed some light on Del Gatto’s role in the whole thing. He’d heard nothing since they’d come to his station and demanded to take over the case.

Agent Brush Cut greeted him in the entrance, a vast plaza where natural light filtered through high windows. Art installations and symbols of justice and integrity adorned the lobby, reminding the public of the bureau’s mission and objectives. His department at Sweetwater was a hovel compared to this.

“Let’s talk in private,” the agent said, gesturing for Reid to follow him. There was a large folder under his arm and he still wore the same black suit he’d been in before.

They didn’t clear security, instead going into a private office adjoining the lobby, presumably for discussions such as this with non-bureau law enforcement officers and individuals.

“Take a seat,” Brush Cut said.

Reid chose one of four chairs around a circular table. There was nothing else in the room, no pictures on the walls, no vase of flowers, no rug. Purely functional.

“I’m glad you called,” Brush Cut said. “I’ve been meaning to touch base.”

Yeah right.

“That’s why I’m here.” He forced a grin. “How’d it go with Del Gatto?”

The agent pursed his lips. “Men like that are notoriously hard to interrogate. His lawyer stuck to him like glue and, to be honest, we didn’t get very far. We wondered if you’d had more luck?”

Reid narrowly resisted a smirk. “I’ve spoken with Mr. Del Gatto several times since the diamonds washed up on the beach,” he began. “And I’m not sure he had anything to do with the smuggling operation.”

He watched the agent’s face. Brush Cut blinked several times but didn’t immediately reply. That was all the proof Reid needed. “What do you guys know that we don’t?”

Brush Cut glanced down at the file but didn’t reply.
