Storm

I’m having to improvise the snot out of this thing. I’m assuming grande means big…which bodes well for me, in fact. I smirk, then wipe it off with a shake of my head.

It’s the chai part that’s tricky—I only have black tea but plenty of spices on hand, some of which are grown right here in my own herb garden. Cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves…that should do it. Maybe a little coarse-ground black pepper for good measure.

What else was there? Milk, foam—no, no foam. And it was skim milk, right? A splash of two percent’ll have to do. She said three pumps—pumps of what? I’m not hard-pressed to try’n guess that one, but a little honey and vanilla would make this badboy taste like sex.

I glance over my shoulder, where I can still see Gwen sleeping in my bed with Thor, my bedroom door left slightly open. And no, I didn’t join her in there. I slept on the couch, like any half-decent caveman would. Doesn’t really matter if she came onto me last night. I wasn’t going to have sex with a virtual stranger. Much less a stranger whose trek up to my cabin had been an actual living nightmare.

The sight of her now, cocooned in blankets, the pale midmorning sun on her cheek, plants an ache deep in my chest. It’s like she’s meant to always be right there.

I wheel back to the cookstove and my best stab at Gwen’s frothy Starbucks concoction. I just look at it for a moment, screwing up my face at it.

I’m forgetting something, ain’t I?

Late last night, Gwen didn’t want to pee alone in the dark so I followed her down and turned my back like a gentleman would. It took her for-goddamn-ever but she finally went. Then we got her hands washed and bandaged, and I let her borrow a flannel button-down and showed her to bed. Gwen sent up a sleepy, kitten-eyed stare, as I laid the blanket over her, making it very, very hard to stay away the rest of the night.

She fuckin’ cute, and fuckin’ sexy, all rolled into one. Feisty, sweet. Hot as sin—

Extra hot—that’s what it was. I heat the carafe over the fire a minute longer.

That achy spell roots deeper as I wait, and think, my rational side warring with flights of fantasy. I picture delivering the drink to her, it being a perfect copycat—a feat of magic in and of itself—seeing Gwen’s face light up over the steaming rim of the mug as I whisper to her, ‘Stay.’

That would be foolish.

The reality is no one lives in a more remote spot in the Wylder Bluffs than me. There are reasons I built this cabin as far away from everything as I possibly could. Only thing beyond my abode are wolves and bears and a hundred miles of wilderness. My daughter Regis was a sport about it, but I’d never ask this of another woman.

I wasn’t always a recluse. In a former life I was a businessman; when it felt like vending parts of my soul to do the job well, I stopped.
