A circular slab of concrete eighteen inches in diameter was pulled from the wall by thick, heavy eye bolts. Luca dropped it to the ground, rolled it out of the way and stepped back for Dumas to inspect the hole.

Dim light spilt through into the dark space from the room next door. Dante Dumas stepped aside and offered Lola a look with a sweep of his hand.

"And what will I see?" she asked, blinded by Luca's torchlight in her face.

"Freedom," he offered. "Or death. You choose."

Lola crouched, shone her own torch through the round hole and saw row after row of cages. Each cage looked to be ten feet square, with floor to ceiling reinforced mesh along each side and a thick steel gate at the front. The mesh obscured any view of the contents of each cage.

"What is it?" she asked.

"What do you want it to be?" replied Dumas, as if he was ready for the question.

"Okay, so what now?" said Lola. "I mean, I presume you have a plan?"

"Ladies first," said Dumas.

"Oh no," she replied, holding her hands up and standing away from the hole. "I'm not going in there. No chance."

Luca pulled a gun.

"So you chose death after all," said Dumas.

"Why don't you go in there? Or send one of your goons?" asked Lola. She flicked her head at Luca who stared back with cold, hard eyes.

"Oh, I'll be with you," said Dumas. "But it's a bit of a squeeze for these two."

"Why me?"

"Do you think we brought you for a picnic, or for your company? As nice as it is, no. You have a use."

"So it's a job and you need my expertise?"

"It's a vault, Lola. Your speciality," said Dumas, sounding slightly bored with the discussion and anxious to get inside. "So we do it my way, or not at all."

Luca's gun came back up and aimed at her head.

"We do it my way, Lola. Or not at all," repeated Dumas.

Lola took a look through the hole once more.

"Security?" she asked.

Dumas checked his watch, which sparkled in the torchlight.

"We have a forty minute window, so if you don't mind, Lola," said Dumas. "Marco, head back to the tunnel. Stop anyone who tries to get down here. Luca, get the transport."

Lola lay on her back in the hole and pulled herself through, dropping the few feet onto the dusty floor, then stood up and surveyed the cavernous room. The temptation to smash Dumas' head with the heavy Maglite as he came through was strong. But as pleasing as it would be, it would leave few options for escape with Luca on the other side of the wall and presumably guards, locks and cameras blocking the other exits.

For his age, Dumas was sprightly. He pulled himself through with ease, straightened and walked deeper into the room as if it were all one practised movement.

"Is it art?" asked Lola, as she washed her light across the locks of the cages and peered into one of them. Inside were rows of lockers, each marked with a five-digit number and a large keyhole top centre.
