Chapter 11

Anara glared down at Ali from her position beside him on her bed. Even unconscious, the man was infuriating, a source of near-constant annoyance. Bandages covered him in a thick layer from the bottom of his ribcage, up his chest, and over his shoulders. Bloody scratches marred his cheek where he’d hit the ground, and what little of his fine clothing remained after most of it had been cut away by the healer was tattered and torn.

And he was smiling.

She scowled, eyeing the way the corner of his mouth quirked up even in sleep. He should not be smiling. He should not be amused. He’d nearly gotten himself killed by a ganj. Killed because he wanted to “calm” himself by robbing a man whose treasure was guarded by a dragon. Killed because in the middle of his poorly planned robbery, he’d decided to kiss her instead of paying attention to his surroundings. Killed because he’d been so stupid as to use his own body to shield her from the angry reptilian beast.

Not many humans would have kept themselves between a non-human princess and an angry dragon.

Her lips tingled and she raised a hand to touch them. His kiss had been a branding, a possession. Hunger sharpened inside her, the need to know where that passion would have taken them…

As soon as she realized what she was doing, she forced her hand back down to the bed and glared at him anew. “I should have bitten you,” she muttered.

“I’d have bitten you back.”

Midnight-blue eyes fluttered open and the upward quirk of Ali’s mouth spread into a lazy grin. Anara sat up on the bed so she could cross her arms and give him the stony expression he deserved, furiously tamping down the way her heart had skipped a beat when he looked at her.

“You are an idiot,” she told him. “An utter fool. You could have died.”

A shadow passed through his eyes as he seemed to remember his last moments of consciousness. She waited for him to wince, to check his body for injuries. Instead, he pushed himself up on the mound of pillows behind him, getting high enough so he could raise a hand to cup her face. His fingers trailed lightly over her jaw and she shivered.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

She blinked, unnerved as much by her reaction to his touch as his apparent lack of concern for his own life. “I’m fine.” She nodded at the bandages covering him from neck to stomach. “You’re the one who was nearly disemboweled.”

He followed her gesture, contemplating his bandaged state with only mild interest. “I’ll live, I think.” He looked up at her without raising his head, looking at her through a fan of dark eyelashes. “You were worried about me.”

A thousand words crowded on her tongue, fighting to be the first ones spoken. She wanted to tell him he’d scared her, that she was furious at his recklessness, that he was the most ignorant man she’d ever met and he was going to get himself killed.
