Chapter 27
Patrick Calloway thought about Emma as he walked along the shoreline. She was always on his mind, but after Patriceâs atrocities, Emma seemed to be all around him. The sound of the waves reminded him of Emmaâs singing. The stars were the same as the sparkle in her eyes, before all the ugliness. His Sunshine was never the same after what her mother did. He had tried to help her, but the best doctors and medicine couldnât bring her out of her depression. She tried to go to college after her gap year but had come back home after only a few weeks. She was withdrawn, sullen, and paranoid. She locked herself away in her room in Briarbrook.
Thoughts of their last dinner together brought tears to Patrickâs eyes. Emma wanted to move away. She pleaded with him to leave that tiny town for Canada. Heâd told her Calloways donât run when things get tough. They would stick it out. Emma cried, saying that she couldnât stand living there with everyone talking behind their backs. He insisted they stay. Emma had shouted and cried for an hour, but he wouldnât budge. Eventually she gave up and ran upstairs to her room. He should have listened to her. He should have taken her away.
He kicked at a rock in the sand and shoved his hands into his pockets. He turned the vial over in his right hand. His left grazed something cold and smooth in his pocket. He slipped the ring on his finger and felt the familiar burn. It started in his hand and surged up his arm like lava. Heat made its way into his shoulder, settling in his chest. He clutched his pounding heart. Lifting his head to the dark cloudless sky, he cursed under his breath. Closing his eyes, he pictured the terrified look on her face as the knife went into her stomach. The towel he had stuffed into her mouth muffled her screams. She deserved so much more pain for what she had done to himâ for what she had done to Emma. He remembered watching her die. He had looked into her eyes as life left her body.
He removed the ring from his finger and turned it over in his hand. He walked to the waterâs edge and threw it as hard as he could into the ocean. As the ring disappeared into the night, he expected the heat pulsing in his chest to leave with it. Instead, the feeling began to spread. Down his right arm then back up into his neck. When it reached his head, the pain was so intense that he doubled over, falling on his knees into the wet sand. He pounded at his head trying to force the pain away. It burned brighter, hotter, and more intense. The pain, the intense burning would never go away. It was a part of him now.
