WEDNESDAY. KENSICO Dam Plaza, White Plains, NY.

Tabby sat on the picnic bench staring off at people jogging the trail around the historic park. When they’d set off that morning for the shop she’d expected more excitement. Maybe a little danger to rival the failed kidnapping attempt on her that she still knew nothing about. She’d dressed for that in boots, black jeans and a dark maroon top. Instead they’d made a purchase, she’d passed a coded note to the attendant and fifteen minutes after they’d left she’d gotten a call on her burner phone to arrange a meeting.

She should have realized when the meeting didn’t have a time attached to it that things weren’t going to match what was in her head.

Jamie reclined back against the table, his elbows up and like her he watched the people.

The FBI and the others weren’t there in body, but their unending chatter thanks to the earpiece meant Tabby couldn’t even talk to Jamie and take advantage of their privacy.

She glanced sideways at him, taking in his upturned face, the way the sunlight made his hair glint like polished onyx. He really was a handsome man.

He cracked an eye and caught her staring.

Last night she’d wanted him to stay. Her better sense told her she needed to cut and run now, save herself some heartache, but she knew she wouldn’t. The minute she’d given in and texted him for that drink was when she’d allowed herself to fall for him.

Jamie reached over and ran his finger along her knee.

“Something wrong?” he mouthed more than whispered.

She shook her head. What would she even say to him at this point?

I’m in the market for a guy who wants to settle down? How do you feel about kids? Any interest in something more permanent?

Tabby was a fool leading with her heart where she knew it was going to make the wrong decision. But she couldn’t help herself.

Jamie gripped her knee, the warm weight of it loosening some of the tightness in her chest.

“What is it?” he asked a little louder.

“You see something?” Baruti chimed in.

“No, sorry.” Jamie turned to look at Tabby, as though they were having a conversation. “Just talking to myself.”

“Okay.” The disappointment was palpable in Baruti’s voice. “Still no sign of a van or anyone that matches the description of our people.”

Jamie reached up and scratched at his ear, the one that had the comm in it. “There.”

She blinked at him. This was the first time she hadn’t heard his voice next to her and in the comm. He studied her, then tilted his head to the side, a little mischief tugging at the corner of his mouth.

He reached up and slid his hand through her hair. His finger slid along the shell of her ear, then the comm. “You’ve got something, right...here.”

Something clicked and all the chatter that had filled her head was gone, leaving behind a dull throb.

“Better?” he asked.

“Oh my God.” She reached up and massaged her temples.

“I don’t know why they leave their mics open.
