Gemma sat in her car with her arms and forehead resting on the steering wheel. What was she thinking? Why was she doing this to herself? The people who had toured the church and grounds liked the place. They were willing to pay the asking price—in cash. That money would go a long way toward solving many of her current money problems. It would give her the breathing room she needed to figure out a more permanent solution.

And yet, here she was thinking about giving the property away to a budding new church group because they had been nice to her once and she liked them. What was wrong with her?

“Gemma?” Ted peered through the car window with a perplexed look on his face. “Are you all right?”

Gemma sat up and blinked. She didn’t remember driving home. “Yes, fine.” She grabbed her backpack and got out of the car. “I was…thinking.”

“Must have been pretty deep thoughts.” He walked with her down the driveway.

She almost laughed. “No, just frustrating.”

“Can I help?”

Could he? She noticed he was still wearing his jeans and sweatshirt. “Maybe, but you’re busy. It’s okay.” Besides, Lauren, annoying as she was, might be the better person to talk to about this. “How’s the move going?”

“Great. Everything’s here and ready to unpack and the office furniture I bought won’t be delivered until tomorrow, so I have some time. If you want to talk.”

She glanced at him from the corner of her eyes. He was grinning. “I don’t want to keep you from your unpacking.” She twisted the knob and pushed through the front door.

“Nah. I can do that anytime.” He waved his hand.

She shook her head and put a small white box on the big leather chair Al kept by the door. She had stopped at the bakery hoping to talk to Ken, but he had gone to the city to buy some new gadget for the shop. So, she bought Al a half-dozen assorted cupcakes and chatted a bit with Mindy.

“Is that knitting?” Ted was peeking at a basket filled with balls of yarn and a sweater in progress.

“It is. Al’s very talented.”

“Hey, Gemma.” Al lumbered across the foyer.

“Hi, Al. I brought you something.” She held out the little box. “My way of saying I’m sorry for this morning.”

“Ah, that’s okay. Ted here’s a good guy.” Al opened the box, and his round face broke into a smile that showed off his straight white teeth. “Cupcakes.” He closed the box and placed it next to his chair. “Thanks, Gemma. I’ll save them for dessert.” He sank into this chair and picked up the sweater he was working on.

Gemma said good-bye and headed for the kitchen with Ted following along.

“It’s weird seeing a guy with hands that big handling those skinny needles and yarn.” He glanced over his shoulder at Al. “My grandma was a knitter, but she was about five foot nothing and 85 pounds with her socks on.”

“The way Al tells it, he had a bad temper as a kid, so his grandmother taught him to knit in hopes it would calm him down.
