“Your tickets,” Milo said as he placed the printed confirmation paper for me and Jason’s beside my laptop.

Gazing up at him, I sat back as I took in how he stood in front of me. We had never spoken before, and every time he saw me, there was a coldness about him.

“What is your problem with me?” I asked, finally.

Closing his eyes as he removed his glasses to clean them, he looked back at me.

“I still do not trust you. You being here is putting a lot of people in danger.”

“The choice wasn’t mine,” I spoke calmly. Reminding him of that fact.

The slender man nodded and replaced his glasses on his nose. “Yes, I am well aware of that, but if you wanted to leave, you could. All you had to do was say so. You still can.” He eyed the tickets and then me. “Christoff is my responsibility. His life and wellbeing and all that entails, and also I protect his family. I know you’re aware of the current situation, so I can’t help but wonder why you are still here.”

Closing the laptop, I picked up the paper, folding it and looked away from Milo. “You can rest assured that I will be leaving soon. I’m accountable for a lot of things, but I won’t be accountable for the massacre of an entire family.”

The scowl on Milo’s face softened. “That’s a pretty specific thing to say. What do you know?” he asked, now interested in me.

Shrugging my shoulders, I decided to answer. “I read into some of the Mancini background. Joey Mancini was always suspected of murders but never convicted. When taken to trial, he was always found not guilty. Even an eyewitness ended up dead in a sudden car crash on his way to work.” I played with the folded paper as Milo stood there watching me. Surprised by my knowledge. “Even his oldest son has a few cases against him. I also read about the last case against Christoff’s father and Signore Mancini. How the key witness suddenly “disappeared” and the DA had to throw out the case he had painstakingly built.”

Milo took the chair in front of the desk. Taking a seat he studied my face before speaking.

“Signore Meikle never knew about anything Signore Mancini ever did, he never wanted to know. He was the brains of their business and Mancini the muscle. Christoff’s father never wanted to mix his kids with the Mancini kids, but Signore Mancini made sure they did.”

“He could have taken his family and ran, Milo.”

“He tried. But Mancini isn’t a man you escape from. You read it yourself. So instead, Signore Meikle built an empire to help keep his family in the light of the world, in hopes it would keep Signore Mancini away.” He gazed over his glasses at me and smirked. “Rats never like it when lights are on them. But this one…was and still is determined to have his way. You know this and here you sit…Lady of Meikle Towers, and without the official name I must add.
