Chapter 31

A week had passed and Sam was feeling less and less pain as her fractured bones healed more quickly than she expected. She never believed, never dared to dream even, that she would experience such genuine care from an adult, such patience and understanding, and such lavish gifts she still thought she ought not accept.

Carly had kept her promise and Sam had a new pair of glasses, small silver frames that rested perfectly above her cheekbones, with detailed silver Daisies etched and carved into both sides of the frame’s sturdy, silver arms. Carly had found them amongst the hundreds of choices that adorned the wall in the ophthalmologist’s office, and brought them to Sam saying, “These are the ones”. And of course she was right, and they were perfect. Sam left, however, glasses free as she tested out her new contacts lenses and felt, for the first time, somewhat normal.

The pair continued their week off school with a three day shopping spree, picking out an entirely new wardrobe, more clothes than Sam had ever owned in her entire life, combined. Carly didn’t even mind when Sam stopped self-consciously at a freestanding display filled with fancy and expensive underwear. “These are perfect,” she said, sparing Sam from her own awkwardness. Then, after much convincing, Sam was fitted for a bra, followed by Carly’s insistence she get several options in all sorts of fun and different colors.

And then there was Sam’s day in the hair salon, a day full of pampering, shampooing, cutting and styling; and teaching Sam how to utilize her gorgeous hair which now curled naturally around all the right places The hair stylist worked magic through her cutting shears, and turned a simple haircut into a true work of art. As Sam’s chair swiveled back toward the mirror, it took several seconds before she could connect the image staring back to her as her own; was unable to believe how good, how normal, she looked. Sam’s fragile soul was still too broken to recognize the beauty that reflected back at her, and that the adoring hairstylists had fallen in love with her self-conscious innocence.

“You look beautiful, Sam,” Carly gushed, as she squeezed her arms around the back of Sam’s shoulders. “Simply beautiful.”

Now as Sam sat in her pajamas—actual pajamas and not her worn out t-shirt, which no longer offered any modesty as her legs grew lean and tall and her bottom began to round evenly with the new curve of her hips—she felt nervous about returning to school in the morning. Her mind never wandered far from her Daisy, though. Her worry and guilt of failing to protect her baby as she had promised was ever present, and the sturdy thread, which quilted each broken piece of her soul to Daisy’s, continued to weave through Sam’s every thought and action. And if Sam sat quietly enough, as she did in this moment, Daisy’s presence billowed around her in the stillness, and spoke to her through the whispers of her pounding heart.
