Chapter Sixteen

Finn

My body is burning, and I can’t stop shaking. My chest aches with every breath I take. I’m in a world of pain but it definitely beats dying. I force my eyes to open.

The first thing I see is myself, reflected in a ceiling mirror. If I didn’t know better, I’d say I’m a corpse. My face is as white as a ghost’s and the sheets are soaked with blood that I have no doubt belongs to me.

I’m unfamiliar with the room nor do I have any idea where I am right now. It takes all my willpower to turn my head to the side. The pain slices through me, hitting my chest as well as my head. I let out a muffled groan.

It’s then that I see her.

Liana’s head is tipped to the side, her eyes shut and her lips slightly parted as she breathes through her mouth. She’s covered in blood just as much as I am, and if her breathing wasn’t so even, I’d worry that it was hers. Her hair is a mess, her clothes ruined and there are dark circles under her eyes, but at this moment, she’s the most beautiful I’ve ever seen her. It’s as if she’s surrounded with a silent strength that further highlights her beauty, coloring her in gentle power.

I have a sudden urge to touch her, to make sure she’s real. I lift my hand, or at least I try to, but because I’m too weak from the blood loss, I just jerkily shift it to another position. I hit it against something hard. It tips over and falls on the floor with a loud bang.

Liana jerks up, her eyes darting around in panic. It takes her a long moment to realize she’s safe, but when she does, she looks at me. My heart speeds up, banging painfully against my chest when her beautiful green eyes lock with mine. I try to offer her a small smile, but it turns into a grimace.

“You’re awake,” she breathes and jumps on her feet. She ignores the sound of broken glass under her feet, giving me her full attention. “How do you feel?”

“I’ve been better,” I say, my voice weak. “Did you do this?”

Liana’s eyes fill with unshed tears as she nods. “I thought so many times that you died. I was so scared.”

“I’m okay. You did a good job,” I assure her.

“What happened?”

“You saved my life, mo ghrá,” I tell her, avoiding the real question. “And for that, I’ll forever be grateful.”

“Aiden helped,” she says humbly then shakes her head. “Tell me what really happened, and please don’t lie to me. I think we’re past that now.”

“I suppose you’re right,” I concede. “But I don’t remember much.”

“Just tell me what you do remember and we’ll take it from there.”

“Okay,” I say, then take a moment to collect my thoughts. “Oisin got stuck dealing with the fire longer than we thought, so I left the office to pick up some people.”

“What people?”

“My old squad from Dublin,” I reply, not wanting to get into details about them.
