TWELVE

They took Tink’s car back to Lowan and parked up in the small car park designated for Lowan Museum visitors.

“I hope he opens on a Wednesday,” Tink said, as they both stared at the dark windows and closed door to the museum.

It was a weird mix of old and new. A detached, squat building on the main road through the town, Lowan Museum had what seemed to be Tudor beams holding it together and a neon sign in the window. Neither of which looked like they were working.

Annie stepped up and tried the handle. Locked. She knocked loudly and stepped back, listening to any sounds beyond. It was quiet. The whole town seemed quiet; was everyone back out on the search for Aaron as the sun had started to rise?

“Maybe we should have rung ahead,” Annie said. “Do you have Windsor’s details on you?”

As Tink started to rummage around in the giant bag she carried everywhere, the door creaked open and Windsor’s head poked through the gap.

“Oh, detectives, I wasn’t expecting you, do forgive me.” He shut the door in their faces.

The women looked at each other, eyebrows raised. But a few seconds later there was the noise of a lock sliding back and the door opened fully revealing Windsor in a pair of plaid pyjamas and leather slippers.

“Do come in, do come in.” He ushered them through the door and closed it promptly behind them. “It’s nippy out there.”

They followed him through a tiny gift shop into the belly of the building where display cases held objects Annie couldn’t quite see through the gloom.

“Please take a gander,” Windsor said, flicking a light switch somewhere and illuminating both the whole room and the individual displays. “Michael has the kettle on, can he get either of you a drink while I go and get dressed? I feel rather foolish standing here in my jim jams.”

He giggled and Annie liked the man even more than she already had done.

“I’d love a coffee please, white, no sugar,” she replied, while Tink asked for a cup of strong builder’s tea.

“I’ll let Michael know, won’t be long, detectives,” Windsor said as he scuffled out the exhibition room in his slippers.

“Oh my goodness, he’s so sweet,” Tink said, heading to a large wall display depicting a timeline of the town.

“Kirkpatrick would disagree with you,” Annie said, going to join her.

“Kirkpatrick sounds like a man I’d like to disagree with quite a lot,” Tink whispered, making sure the museum was empty first.

The timeline was printed on a large white board, colourful arrows and pictures depicting the history of the small mining community. Grubby faced workers smiled from underneath their hard hats; black and white photos of cave-like structures; a pencil sketch of the galvanised mine shafts and layers of sands and flints; and more modern pictures of the local houses. Annie leant in, peering at the most recent photo of the town and the lake, noticing the divots along the playing field, a throwback to the holes dug in the ground to reach the flint.
