It becomes your

companion not your prison.

And what joy a good sofa

can be.

Your battle with the

aliens lost. You left

behind a beloved,

a home,

friends,

a hole in the

conscience of City Hall.

I last glimpsed you

as I waited in line

to get into the gay film festival.

Our wave to each other

was a hello not a goodbye.

Unaware there’d be no chance

for more coffee dates.

It’s said people

are still alive

as long as someone

remembers them.

I think of you every time

I pass the table in the Castro

where we laughed

that sunny afternoon

in Café Flore.
