CHAPTER 22

“Brokkr, me son!” King Varnir Anvilborn boomed cheerfully, and pushed himself up from the table. “Praise the Allfather fer yer safe return!”

The king and his son embraced briefly. “It be good ter be back,” Brokkr replied gruffly.

“I know it be no Burdr Geirr,” King Varnir rumbled, “but it will suffice fer now.”

Brokkr nodded. “It will indeed. Anything will be better than that flea infested, dung heap I been stuck in.”

“Ye must tell me o’ it,” the dwarf king said eagerly.

“I will father,” Brokkr held up a hand, “but first ye need ter call the Council together. I’m afeared we bring grave news that all will need ter hear.”

“Very well.” King Varnir then barked an order and several guards that had been stationed around the room hurried out. After the guards left, the king turned to Mike and his friends. “I do believe I owe ye a reward,” King Varnir smiled. “Name yer price, and if it be in me power ter grant, it shall be yers.”

“Thank you, your Majesty,” Liz answered first, “but as I said before, we require no reward.”

“Aye,” King Varnir nodded slyly, “but ye would no insult us by refusing a gift would ye?”

Liz scowled, but then sighed in resignation. “No, we could not refuse a gift.”

“Wonderful!” The dwarf king clapped his large hands and a moment later a dwarf warrior entered carrying a large folded cloth. The warrior then presented the cloth to Liz. Looking slightly confused, she accepted the gift.

“Open it,” King Varnir waved her on eagerly. “Open it.”

Slowly, Liz unfolded the large cloth. She held one end as the opposite edge of the material dropped and touched the floor. The cloth was revealed to be a heavy cloak made of a strange looking material that looked almost like scales, whose color seemed to shift in the light.

Brokkr’s eyes grew wide and he looked at his father in surprise. “Ye be given her yer dragon skin Cloak o’ Concealment?”

King Varnir nodded. “I have no need o’ such an item and I believe she will put it ter far better use than I ever will.”

“What does it do?” Liz asked, holding the strange cloak up before her.

“The cloak will take on any shape ye wish and it blends in with its surroundin’s,” Brokkr explained. “It will no make ye invisible, mind ye, but it be the next best thing.”

Liz eyed the cloak in wonder. “I couldn’t possibly accept-” King Varnir’s eyes flashed and Liz swallowed what she was going to say. “Thank you,” she breathed instead.

“Ye be most welcome, lass,” the dwarf king boomed happily and then turned to Mike. “And what would the Guardian have o’ me?”

Mike took a deep breath. “I wish to learn Runecraft.”

“Runecraft!” King Varnir sputtered. “No human can learn Runecraft. The secrets were given ter the dwarves by Odin himself.”

Mike wasn’t about to tell the king that he already knew how. “That may be,” he said, “but I wish to try.”

King Varnir laughed. “Very well, Guardian. Ye have me permission ter try and learn a skill that only a dwarf can be knowin’.
