Chapter 9: Memories

When we leave the farm, there is absolute fury in my stomach and nothing else. Natalie drops me off at the hospital, begging me not to tell people about what I've seen. I know that she probably wants me to go over the heads of the local authorities. Their incompetence leaves more than just a sour taste in my mouth.

In fact, I doubt that it's merely incompetence. There was at least one cop at Everett's little house party. The police in Woodbridge have to know what he's been up to, but they have done nothing. I don't know whether he has enough influence for them to turn a blind eye, but that doesn't matter.

Everett's reign of terror is over. I have a bad feeling about some of his friends, too, even if I haven't found any proof about them yet.

My phone rings. I frown as I pull it out of my pocket and check the name. A mild surprise comes through me when I see Detective Erik Novak's name flashing at me from the screen.

"Interesting," I mutter to myself when the sensation of butterflies in my stomach threads its way through my veins.

Walking away from the hospital entrance, I answer the call, wondering if they've gotten any further with the case. "Emma Rose, hello?"

"Emma, it's good to speak with you." His voice is soft and gentle, but I can hear the gruff undertones. "Just thought I'd check in, ask how things are going with you."

He sounds a little awkward, like he's weighed the pros and cons of calling me and didn't know what to expect when he decided to do it anyway. Without meaning to, I smile, relieved that he won't be able to see it. There's a lot I cannot tell him, but I decide that I'll keep to the basics.

"It's tough," I admit, walking even further from the entrance so that I'm in a part of the parking lot with little foot traffic. "Touch and go. My father is still in the ICCU."

"I'm sorry about that." Erik sighs on the other end. "I hope things get better fast so you can get back quickly... You know, uh, I mean... for the animals."

I want to chuckle, but I keep it down. Erik seems flustered, a strange thing for a hardened detective who has dealt with the cases he's faced.

"If it helps," he continues, dragging the sentence out somewhat, "things aren't looking too good for Alistair. Doctors don't really think that he's going to make it through the week."

The sensation of relief and victory flows through me. If Erik is right, and the leader of the dogfighting ring won't come back from his wounds, then the traces of my work will be completely buried.

"I know it's an awful thing to say," I start, pretending as if it's a difficult thing to admit. "But I think... maybe, he deserves it. You know? After everything he's done."

Perhaps it's dangerous for me to say something like that. I doubt they'll find
