Change, of Course

Polly quickly decided she ought to dress the part. A special day demanded a special outfit. As she donned her favorite power suit, Polly couldn’t help but let her mind wander to how she would spend the salary increase, and what she might do with all that new office space. What almost nobody else knew is that Polly had been dreaming of buying her own home but she just couldn’t afford it—Until now, she sighed, more from relief than anything else. It was going to be a great day; Polly was sure of that.

The 9vine.com office seemed livelier than normal. As Polly walked into the building and made her way to the meeting room, she couldn’t help but notice all the young people milling around, seemingly having a great time for 9:30 a.m. Frankly she’d spent so much time with her head down on tasks she didn’t get a chance to socialize with her colleagues as much as she might have liked. For all the talk in the press about what a great culture the company had, Polly rarely got to experience it.

Polly entered the meeting room a little early, intending to wait for Nelson, who did not tolerate tardiness. She was not alone. But just as Polly was about to introduce herself to the stranger sitting in front of her, a commotion erupted outside the room.

Nelson still had a look of shock on his face as he marched past the meeting room where Polly and an unfamiliar woman were sitting. He could see a look of bewilderment on Polly’s face as he walked sheepishly by with a box of his belongings in hand.

“Not enough e-commerce experience,” he muttered to himself as he left the building in a haze, wondering how this could have happened.

Evidently someone had decided the company needed to adjust their sales channels to focus on e-commerce, but Nelson was a content guy. All his hard work seemed to be for nothing now. He’d been driving traffic to the site like a champ for the past two years, and all of a sudden it seemed nobody cared.

In fairness to Nelson’s superiors, they had been very compassionate. They acknowledged his value and his expertise, but had decided to go in another direction. Effective immediately, he was being let go, and they were going to replace him. Evidently, his successor’s name was Diane, and she had been in e-commerce for more than two decades. “I’m pretty sure two decades ago it was just called ‘commerce’,” he had said in the meeting before calming himself down. But from what they said, Diane would be able to really hit the ground running.

As Nelson stumbled into the parking lot, he couldn’t help but look back with an ounce of regret on the countless evenings and weekends he’d spent with Polly meticulously driving those traffic numbers. Poor Polly, he thought. I hope she lands on her feet.
