Up on the road, the crash investigators were hard at work. A fire engine sat idling, the crew waiting to be given the nod to go down and free Paul Jacobs' body from the wreckage. Stark approached a bear of a man in a high-visibility jacket and police cap.
âHow's things, Jock?â
Sergeant Jock McGinn was one of the best crash site investigators in Scotland. âAlright, Adam, I'm no' too bad, how're you doing?â
The two men shook hands.
âI'm ok, big man, thanks. Anything out of the ordinary?â asked Stark.
âNo' really, mate. Looks like he hit the kerb after taking the corner too fast, an' that sent him over the carriageway, through the hedge, an' into the field. The road was wet, so there are no skid marks, but the alloys left a mark on the kerb back up the road there, eh.â
âThere's a dent on the back of the car. Do you think he could have been shunted?â
McGinn took a few seconds to re-survey the scene and check his notes. âHmm, aye, maybe, I suppose. The marks on the kerb are a bit further from the corner than normal but still within possible. I did have a tiny doubt about it, given how well those cars are supposed to handle, eh. Thing is though, there's no way of telling how good or bad a driver he was, you ken what I mean? We'll need to do more detailed calculations but I suppose we shouldn't rule it out at this stage.â
âI'm interested to know why it took so long for anyone to report it. It's a fairly busy road most of the time. How come nobody noticed the car through the gap in the hedge?â asked Stark.
âI think if you were coming round that corner in the dark, the angles are wrong to see beyond into the field. You might have noticed a gap in the hedge but why would you screech to a halt an' go back to see if a car was in the field? What would make you assume it was an accident that had just taken place?â
âAye, fair point.â
âIt wouldn't be that busy if it happened in the early hours, which it likely did, an' it was raining. I'm no' really surprised it got overlooked until the light came up.â
âOk, that's fine, Jock. Do all the stuff you need to do an' let me know what your conclusions are. I'll see you later on. Cheers.â
âAye, no bother, Adam. Cheers.â
Stark went back to his car feeling a bit uneasy about the crash. He couldn't help but think about the connection to Jonny Jacobs. Could Billy McDuff be involved? He'd heard from a friend in the prison service that Jacobs was having a hard time inside and the authorities were pretty sure McDuff was the main force behind it. Billy McDuff was a man for bearing grudges, as Stark knew all too well, and he wouldn't rule out this being some form of revenge for what happened to Billy's son. Stark hoped he was wrong and this was just an accident, plain and simple, but something nagged at his gut.
