"That's why I was so delighted when Starfleet agreed to my request to prosecute this new case he's defending."

"You asked for the case?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"It's what we call in the office a 'dead bang' case. This Klingon, Mak'Tor, was found kneeling over the body holding the murder weapon. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to beating Cogley on this case, so that I can shut up everyone in the office."

Kirk smiled, nodded, and said, "I see." Then he, like Areel had done before, turned his attention to cutting his food, although not quite for the same reason. She had done it to interrupt him. He did it because he needed to look away, otherwise Areel would have caught him studying her. There had been a certain intensity in her tone, something that told Kirk her reasons for wanting to beat Cogley in this case were stronger than simply wanting to put a stop to some office jests. No, there was something more. He didn't know what. He didn't know why. He just knew it was there and that the next several days were not going to be easy ones for his two friends.
