Under the watchful and comforting eye of the Takaya’Nim, Shonali spends the morning in deep meditation. Despite her reunion with her mother and her reinstatement in her tribe, despite the admiration of all, despite the elder’s apology, the wise man can tell clouds still darken her sky. There can be only one reason: Finch.

If he were of their tribe, they would have made him elder last night. Maybe, maybe that would have helped Shonali accept her feelings for him. She’s fought beside him in battles, traveled the world with him, and entrusted him with her life more than once. Why she can’t follow her heart with him like she did with the white buffalo is a mystery to him… and everyone else in the village for that matter.

Shonali opens her eyes when the Takaya’Nim ughs in realization. He knows what to do.

“May the wind clear your dark clouds, Shonali.” He hands her the brew of wintergreen leaves. She drinks. This is what she missed most during her exile.

“Do you know who broke the Sky Mother’s heart? The tale is not told very often.”

“She was tricked…”

“In ancient times, when the stars were more than mere points of light in the night sky, there was one that shone brighter and more beautifully than all the others. This star was known as a trickster spirit, shooting across the heavens, elusive and impossible to grasp.

Sky Mother, grounded and serene, fell deeply in love with this dazzling star. The star, captivated by her nurturing essence, reciprocated her love. But their union was destined to be brief, for the restless spirit could not remain still. As he departed, he witnessed Sky Mother’s sorrow manifesting as tears, which mingled with the earth to create the Teshoni. In a final act of love, the star left a spark within them, a gift that would forever illuminate their path.

This spark imbued the tribe with the wisdom to strive and adapt, distinguishing them as more than mere guardians of nature. They also became thinkers and creators, able to understand and manipulate the world around them in profound ways.

His brief but passionate love for Sky Mother lives on in the cleverness and resilience of the Teshoni. Every invention, every ingenious solution, every flash of insight is a silent thanks to the trickster star who loved and left, but whose spark continues to burn brightly within the hearts and minds of the Teshoni.

His name was Finc’ot. We also know him as the brain warrior.”

The earth and sky swallow Shonali up in a dark hole. Flashes of memories whirlwind through her head. Fire and water hiss in her bursting heart. She pulls her legs against her chest, her back against the side of the hut. Her hiccups follow from her tears, the tears follow from her hiccups. Her lips tremble, her body shakes. Squeezing her eyes shut doesn’t stop the salty flow over her cheeks. Shonali covers her head with her hands. Her hiccups turn to sobs, that turn into wails. She hears the Takaya’Nim sit down next to her, not against her.
