Tom Myers enjoyed a good ride in the country.

After dropping Dooley off to fetch Shannon Stills so they could have a little chat about the Henry Wheeler Sr. case, Myers checked in at the office to make sure there wasn’t anything pressing there that required his immediate attention. Since there wasn’t anything on his desk that couldn’t wait, he headed out on patrol. The Sommersville Sheriff’s Department covered the entirety of Sommers County, which consisted of one hundred and sixty-three square miles and eighty-nine thousand residents. Sommers County was made up of various terrains, lakes, rivers, farms, woodlands, and a large undeveloped area. Not huge, but big enough. Since Sommersville incorporated and became a city, a local police force had been created to police within the city limits. That was fifteen square miles outside of the whole county.

A lot of ground to cover.

He liked to make sure that there were always at least two deputies on patrols, moving about the county. He believed that being out in the community was a good thing. Sommersville’s citizens could see their sheriff’s department at work. This became especially more important in recent years as law enforcement had lost the trust of the people due to several incidents of corruption, overreach, and downright brutality. You couldn’t turn on the news without seeing it splashed across the headlines. He could understand why people were more afraid of the police these days. It wasn’t a good look, and he made every effort to make sure his department did things the right way. To build trust.

Dooley’s report on Deputy Reynolds the day before weighed on him. Myers knew that the two of them needed to have a frank conversation. Shane Reynolds was young, a bit too eager at times, but had the makings of a good lawman. Based on what Dooley told him, some of the young deputy’s enthusiasm had resulted in him making some poor choices while on the job. They would need to be addressed, but not until he was sure exactly how to address them.

He found the drives relaxing. Solitude helped clear his mind when he was trying to solve a particular problem and the long drive by himself worked perfectly. Myers played in his mind the conversation he would have with Reynolds. He liked to be prepared for such interactions and often took long drives to practice in his head. He preferred to work out all the possible reactions and talking points beforehand. Shane Reynolds was a good kid. He hoped he could straighten him out with ease.

Pointing the truck up Highway Eleven, Myers passed through town and headed toward The Zone, the county’s undeveloped area. There would be few distractions out there in the wild. He could work out not only his conversation with Deputy Reynolds, but also the uncomfortable conversation he suspected would accompany former deputy, Shannon Stills. Stills and Wottry were tight back in the day, and though he had lost touch with them, he suspected that bond remained strong today.
