A large number of South Asians worked in Singapore as unskilled workers on construction sites and other manual jobs. At weekends when they were off work and headed to Little India to socialize, that district became very crowded. With the number of manual laborers rapidly increasing over the past two decades, class-inflected xenophobia also became more commonplace. In a survey of Little India, Chang (2000: 357) writes:

Racist overtones were rife as respondents spoke about their fears for personal safety although there has been no documented evidence of burglary. The recurrent theme of the “Indian threat” extended to complaints that workers blocked public access paths and contributed to crowded car parks and buses. One respondent even complained that she “can’t stand the smell of too many Indians” and the migrant workers were making themselves “too much at home” in Serangoon Road.
