Karen noticed a marked shift in the investigation’s pace by the time she returned to the station in the afternoon. Much to Derek Redmond’s frustration and anger, York golf club would stay closed for the rest of the day while forensic investigations continued. The police dispatched a search team to conduct a detailed sweep of the fairway leading from the unmade track to where the forensic tent was positioned. A private ambulance had taken away the body before Karen left the club. With Ed staying back to oversee the crime scene, Karen hurried back after Belinda had called her with an important update.

Karen made her way through the station, making a pit stop at the canteen to pick up a sandwich and coffee before making her way to the SCU. There was an urgency in her step knowing the team would be at full stretch now with two bodies, one missing person, and a few interesting leads.

“Karen.”

It was the unmistakable voice of Kelly. Karen stopped, fixed a smile, and turned to see her boss catching up with her along the corridor. More heat. “Ma’am.”

“Good thing I caught up with you. One of our three women?” Kelly asked, ignoring pleasantries and being direct.

“Yes, ma’am. Raveena Chowdhury. Her parents are coming over this afternoon with DCI Lewis for a formal identification, and despite her injuries, it looks like her.” Karen took a moment to update her boss on the injuries and the circumstances in which she found her. Kelly grimaced as she listened to the details.

“Not good. Any clues at the scene?”

Karen scratched her nose and shook her head. “Forensics are still at the scene. I’ve left Ed in charge. The perp is playing with us. I simply know it.”

“Why do you say that?”

“The bodies were dumped in a way that did not require much effort to hide them. Okay, the forest doesn’t get as much footfall, but a golf club? Dozens of players every day. Right in the middle of the fairway for everyone to see?” Karen paused for a moment before continuing. “It appears he drove into an unmade track that skirts the back of the course. It’s off the main road and only used by golfers or ground staff. That’s not busy. He could have dumped Raveena there with no one seeing him and driven off again. Why would he park there, and then carry the body a hundred yards up the fairway and leave her there?”

Kelly weighed up Karen’s assessment and agreed. “Okay, keep me updated.” She paused mid step. “Oh, by the way. Any update on your colleague in London?”

“No, ma’am. He has a twenty per cent chance of pulling through, so I’m glad that Jade and I had the chance to visit him in case it’s the last time we see him. Thank you for letting us go.”

“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. That’s not good news. It was the right decision for you to go. If you need to talk about it, my door is always open.
