- Chapter 12 -

I didn't know how to feel. One part of me was over the moon, absolutely ecstatic that Jed Alderville wants to take me to the school dance. But then, the flip side of that made me wonder whether there was more to it. I cast my mind back to the night in the dungeon, the night that those three boys stood before me with Audrey, threatening to take everything away from me.

I didn't dare tell Sierra that he had asked me to the dance. I already knew what her reaction would be. Not only did she not approve of me talking to them and intervening with their 'ways', she thought I should keep away from them altogether.

Sierra was strong in her own way, but it wasn't the way I liked to deal with my problems. Our upbringings were similar, but we had taken a different education on how to deal with everything.

His small body waddled across the hall and a weird looking smile crept across his face. I glanced sideways, I wasn't entirely sure whether he was looking at me and smiling or someone else. I shuffled forward in the line and looked away, placing my tray down on the metal support. I reached out to spoon some eggs onto my plate before I felt a tap on my shoulder.

"Excuse me, Miss Roberts. Do you have a second?" I turned to face Mr. Dulverton, the corner of his mouth quirked up as I looked. "Sorry to interrupt your breakfast, sweetie."

Don't ever call me sweetie again, you creep.

"That's ok, what's up?" I stepped out from the line, gripping my tray tightly as I stood across from Mr. Dulverton.

I clutched onto my tray as if my life depended on it, I wondered what on earth he could want. He raised his hand up to my shoulder and guided me away from the food line, pulling me across to the side of the hall. There was a weird smell coming from him, like an
