Chapter Sixteen
Bailey
âWhatever shady stuff youâre into, I donât care. I just donât want to get involved.â Spyder tensed at my declaration, and I sat up to run my hands up my face and through my hair. Pulling my knees to my chin, I gazed down at him, and his eyes narrowed on me. âI think your uncleâs car shop is a front, but I donât know for what, and I donât really wanna know. Okay?â
âUh, okay. But, baby, Iâm not gonna lie to you about shit. Iâm not gonna stand here and say I wonât tell you. Fuck, man. Iâm not gonna lie, and Iâm sure as fuck not gonna let you strut that fine ass of yours out of town again. Would you get in trouble with your job or somethinâ? Because you work internet security and stuff?â I started to shake my head but hesitated, and I rested my cheek on my knees to sigh. Spyder didnât seem offended at all, just surprised, and I hummed thoughtfully.
âI donât know, actually, but thatâs kinda the point. The closest Iâve ever come to being scrutinized by the law is when the police came to talk to me in the hospital and then said they thought the hit to my head made me confused.â Spyder grunted lowly, raising his arms above his head to arch slightly as memories floated behind my eyelids when I blinked. âMy supervisor was horrified when I showed up at work the day after I got out of the hospital. He practically pushed me out with FMLA while I switched to working remotely. Heâs a good guy, just not . . . tactful. But anyway, back to the other shit. I donât want to know what youâre doing, Spyder. Based on your reply, it canât be anything good.â
He shrugged lightly. âItâs perfectly fine as long as youâre not someone who crosses me. Baby, Iâm in a biker club. You can fuckinâ see clear as day Iâm the Prez of the Warpath MC. Now, Iâll explain that shit to you if you want, but when it comes to the normal shit with the shop and whatnot, I like being my own boss. Actually, Iâm glad I can pay other people to do shit I donât wanna do. Like I said, Iâm not gonna lie and say the shop isnât a front. Itâs some of the only clean cash we have cominâ into the club. The rest of it is blood money, but I wonât tell you about that unless you ask, of course.â Smirking at me, Spyder tucked his arms under his head to sigh in satisfaction. âGoing to Vegas is always a great time, but otherwise itâs pretty boring and normal. Is this about what Bruiser said last night?â
âYeah . . . sorta . . . a lot, yeah.â Flames licked my cheeks, and I rolled my lips between my teeth to stop myself from scrunching up my face. Sitting up, Spyder rubbed my back comfortingly, and he smiled tenderly.
