Chapter Eleven
Fifteen minutes later, I called Vance on my new phone on my way out the door.
"Angelica?" Aunt Thelma called behind me. I stopped with one hand on the door and the other one holding my phone to my ear. I turned around. Aunt Thelma met me and handed me her car keys.
"It will be quicker," she said.
"Thanks."
"What's that?" Vance asked me when our lines connected.
"Nothing, I was just talking to my aunt. Are you free right now?"
I could hear papers rustling on the other end of the line.
"Yeah, just finishing up."
"How'd it go?"
"Good. Jury found her innocent, so..." Vance didn't finish the sentence. I could picture him shrugging on the other end of the line.
"Congrats."
"Thank you. So, what's going on? I see you got your new phone."
"Did you know you can conjure them?"
"I did. Guess I should've told you that."
"Not your fault. Anyway, I have loads to tell you. Want to meet me at the taco truck?" Silverlake's latest restaurant wasn't tied to a location at all, but you could almost always find it across from the high school on weekdays. It was a perfect location as teenagers always seemed to have the largest appetite and extra money to spend. If not, the business district was a short walk away, giving townsfolk an excuse to take a walk on their lunch hour. It was a win-win for everyone.
Fifteen minutes later, I parked Aunt Thelma's car against the curb. I spotted Vance standing off to the side of the food truck and talking on his cell phone. I waited in the car for a couple minutes, giving him time to wrap up his conversation before getting out to meet him.
"Sounds good... I will for sure be in touch ... You too...Bye."
"Hey, how's it going?" I said once Vance turned his attention toward me.
"Good. That was Arthur. Thanks for the recommendation. He went ahead and asked me to represent him." Vance slipped the phone back into his back pocket.
"Good, thatâs a smart move. I think Amber's going to martyr him.â
"It wouldn't be the first time."
"Isn't that the truth."
"Howâd it go with Rick?"
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about."
Together we moved to get in line for our lunch. We weren't the only people craving the street fare. It looked like the whole football team was in line ahead of us. I was careful to keep my voice low.
âMisty and I met up with Rick's wife, Kayla."
"Sophia's niece."
"Yes." I tucked a wayward strand of hair behind my ear. "She hadn't yet heard about Sophia."
"A bit surprising, but not all that unusual, seeing it happened this morning."
"I'll give you that, but Rick came home while we were there."
Something about my expression gave my thoughts away.
"And he knew," Vance finished my sentence.
"He did, and he wasn't very happy to see us."
Vance raised his eyebrows. "I bet. What did he say about getting into it with Sophia?"
"Kayla didn't know about that either, but Rick didn't deny it when Misty brought it up. In Rick's defense, he said it was because he came home yesterday and Kayla was upset because of Sophia.
