“Are they going to fight again?” Hannah whispered.

“I hope not, but I think we need to get out of here,” Cam whispered back.

“Hi, Apsara? I was wondering if I could ask a huge favor? We’re stuck downtown again.” Pause. “Yeah, the battery is dead. We’d just walk home, but, well, remember that thing from last week with the vultures and the squirrels?” Longer pause. “It looks like it’s happening again.” During this pause, Hannah could hear Apsara’s exclamations. Mom nodded. “Thanks. Thanks so much. Alright, see you soon.”

Mom turned the phone off and slipped it in her purse.

“Okay, she’s coming. She’s going to meet us on Third.”

Hannah thought that was a wonderful idea—as it was in the opposite direction of the vultures and the squirrels. Cam grabbed his sword and Mom herded them toward the corner of Third and Main.

“So that last ghost, Mom, do you know who he was?”

“What? Oh, the last ghost. Well, he looked kind of like a picture I saw of John Shute, the banker. Kinda.” Mom stole a glance over her shoulder and so did Hannah. The advance was slow, but people on the sidewalk hurried to take cover.

“Shute Park!” Cam exclaimed in victory.

“What about Shute Park?” Mom asked.

“That’s where Ey-de-Nét here needs to go and get his, I don’t know, shield maybe? The ghosts said they would help us get it,” Hannah explained.

“Yeah, except that they said they can only be in theaters,” Cam added.

Mom lifted her eyebrows. “Ah, Orange Phelps used to show movies out there on the 4th of July. He had a big black tent and everything.”

“Yeah, then definitely we need to get to Shute Park!” Cam exclaimed.

They’d made it down to Third. Mom dropped her head with a frustrated sigh.

“Mom, I really think we just need to go straight there,” Hannah agreed.

“I think we need to go straight home,” Mom countered.

“Every time we didn’t take care of the key right away, bad stuff happened,” Hannah reminded her. “And this new crow lady? She is super powerful.”

“Yeah,” Cam said. “Those magic poppies like the ones in the backyard? They grow on the ground just because she walked there. She didn’t even do anything!”

“Come here, you two,” Mom ordered and drew them into a sandwich hug. “I wish your dad would stop his pouting and at least give us some clue what’s going on. I have no idea how to deal with this. I can’t even research it myself…wait a minute. You said a name.”
