3.2.8 Other density wave theories

3.2.8.1 Chaotic spiral arms

Theories of chaotic structure try to explain the more ragged structure that is seen in many spiral galaxies, i.e., those with short fragmented arms with no clear two-arm symmetry, e.g., NGC 2841 (see figure 3.17). This type of galaxy has been described as a ‘swirling hotch-potch of spiral armss by Goldreich and Lynden-Bell (1965). Although they are less dramatic, they are more common than Grand Design spirals.
