âWhat was that?â My teeth threatened to chatter.
Cali flashed the light in the direction of the sound. âCoyotes,â she said. âIâve heard them on other camping trips.â
She didnât seem scared by the coyotes, so I forced myself to breathe deeply. I quietly followed her toward camp. But several times I turned back to the sound of the wailing coyotes.
Cali broke our silence with a startled, âOh!â When she saw that I jumped in response, she quickly added, âI almost forgot. I promised that weâd bring sticks for toasting marshmallows.â
She pulled a folded camping knife out of her pocket and held it up for me to see. âWe can cut some green branches with this. Here, take the flashlight and shine it on these bushes. The long, thin branches should make great marshmallow sticks.â
I held the flashlight as Cali cut a half dozen branches from a bush. She trimmed smaller twigs from the branches to make them easier to carry back to camp.
âThere,â she said as she got to her feet. With the skill of an accomplished camper, she easily folded the blade back into the knife and slipped it in to her pocket. âThat should do it.â
âIâm ready to go back to the fire,â I admitted. âThose coyotes are giving me the creeps.â
Cali carried the marshmallow sticks, and I led the way with the light. A cloud moved across the moon, and suddenly the dark night became almost black.
A few steps later, Cali reached forward and grabbed me.
âDo you hear that?â she whispered.
I froze at the sound of her question. I listened hard. But all I heard was a lone coyote still yipping sharply in the distance. And the murmur of voices from camp.
I shook my head as I whispered back, âNo. What did you think you heard?â
âListen.â Cali spoke so softly that I could barely hear her. I strained to pay attention.
I felt it before I heard it. The faintest sound followed a moment later. Was someone trying to sneak up on us?
Cali shivered. I knew that in the darkness beside me she was biting on her bottom lip. She was also probably playing with a little piece of hair.
The sound got louder. Something was definitely shuffling through the grass toward us.
I wished with all my might that the night werenât so black.
Cautiously, I swung the light in a half circle around us.
Cali cried out in surprise.
