ZION ‘STEEL’ PERKINS

I was on some straight sucka shit, pulling up to this woman’s job. I didn’t know shit about her schedule, so it’s a chance that she wasn’t even here. Literally for the last two weeks, my son has been giving me the cold shoulder, off and on with his mood swings because of how everything had played out with Toni. His game was tomorrow, and when he woke up this morning, the first thing he asked me was if Toni was going to be at his game tomorrow, and I told him that I wasn’t sure. That wasn’t the answer that he was looking for. His little ass was so mad at me that when I dropped him off to school, he didn’t even do our secret handshake that we would normally do, neither did he kiss me on my cheek, and let me know that he loved me.

I had to make shit right. So much so that after picking Zayne up from school, I dropped him off with my parents, going to let him stay there until tomorrow morning, and here I was, stepping out of my car, after just parking it in the lot, and I was going to go in search of Toni. If she tried to play me, and acted like she didn’t want to talk to me, I couldn’t even fault her because she did get that side of me that was standoffish, didn’t like to talk, and was keeping to myself, so I wouldn’t blame her if she turned me down, but I wasn’t scary, so I was going to do what I had to do regardless.

It was a little after four in the afternoon, and I could only hope that she was still here. I walked with my hands in my pockets, and a lot of the kids around campus recognized who I was, so of course, I received a lot of smiles, stares, waves, and some even quickly pulled their phones out, recording me. I was following the signs that would lead me into the office, and once I was almost there, I ran into the head football coach. It was coach Terry, and two weeks ago, it was my first time meeting him in person, but I knew who he was. I’ve seen clips of him from back in the days. I’ve even shown my son his footage from when he was in his prime, and that nigga was a monster out there on the field. He was one hell of a football coach, and I loved the way he trained Zayne, and the rest of the kids when they came out to his football camp. For a man that was in his 50’s, I had to give it to him and say that he looked good. I’m sure he was getting in that gym, training with his players because the evidence was all in his build.
