Chapter 5
The growl that escaped my lips was fiercer than Cocoâs. I looked down to see her big brown eyes looking up at me. My fingertips dug into my waist as I contemplated whether throwing something at it would be more effective. After all, I had tried at least a dozen spells without any success.
My index finger pushed the fabric of my top back and forth as I stared at the stone coffin. The last spell had made it glow, but only a little, and it wasnât like it had done anything elseâlike open. I didnât want to admit I felt defeated by it. I couldnât admit it. If I admitted it aloud, then it would seem true, and I wasnât a quitter.
Coco padded around the stone coffin with her nostrils pulsing as she sniffed at the air closest to it.
âNansina, I canât sense any really powerful magic,â Coco said. She came to a stop beside my foot and looked up at me. âMy paws are telling me we should be running and out the door is where they want to go.â
Her tail hung low. I crouched down and gave her a pat before I pulled her in for a hug. I doubted any amount of reassurance would change how she felt, but itâs the thought that counts, right? âWhenever you need a cuddle, you just let me know. No matter what, we do this together. No witch, or pup, are left behind.â
A whimper echoed through the crypt again. Coco lay on the ground and rested her face on her outstretched front paws. I gave her another pat on the back before I stood back up and faced down the tomb.
âI wonder if there is something about the stone that is preventing us from sensing the magic at its fullest. Coco, weâve come this far so we canât just run away with our tail between our legs now, can we?â
When I glanced back down at Coco, her sad brown eyes confronted me. Damn it. I turned my attention back to the stone to avoid caving in and running back to the academy.
âMaybe thereâs a clue in one scene. The first one with the amulet and potions, maybe?â I walked around to that side to look at it again. âMost of this is about magic and the way we use it. Potions, magic moving in swirls to the target, the academy we learn at. Ugh, I donât know. Maybe if I just push it really hard, it will move eventually, like the door.â
âAnd if you give it a bigger push and the lid smashed on the ground?â Coco asked. âI mean, that wonât go unnoticed and Head Witch will soon track down your magic essence and then youâll be in big, big trouble.â
âOkay, point taken. I promise I wonât push it that hard; Iâll just give it enough of a push that it slides enough to get my hand inside.â
âNan, you would seriously put your hands inside of that without knowing
