As the Business Roundtable charted a new path forward, it was chaired by Doug McMillon, Walmart’s chief executive and a longtime champion of customers and employees. Doug learned the business from the ground up, unloading Walmart trucks as a teenager for an hourly wage. He rose through the ranks to become chief executive officer of Sam’s Club, the company’s warehouse membership division, and then chief executive of Walmart International, before being named CEO of the whole company in 2014. In talking to Doug, I was struck by how much leadership matters in creating a movement—and that real action begins when leaders make a conscious choice to break with the status quo. Doug candidly discussed how and why Walmart embraced sustainability and set its goal of carbon net zero by 2040.
