Of course, none of this conflict counts for anything unless we can clearly demonstrate to our audience that it is in pursuit of a worthwhile cause. Our speech needs some kind of ‘holy grail’ worthy of our speaker and audience’s concern. Don’t be afraid of shooting high! Many great speeches have been built on guts and gall, like King’s glimpse of the Promised Land, Kennedy’s promise to put a man on the moon and Blair’s promise to abolish child poverty. The object of desire might be real or metaphorical, aspirational or concrete; the important thing is that there is a reason why our speaker cares so much.
