7. Pantheon

Proceed into Piazza di Pasquino, named for the famous talking statue of Pasquino at the corner wall of the immense Palazzo Braschi (Museo di Roma), the Palace of Pope Pius VI and the last of the papal palaces in Rome. It was built by Cosimo Morelli (1791–1796) in a design that recalls the architectural style of 16th-century palazzi. It faces both Piazza di Pasquino and Piazza Navona with distinctive lion and pine cone decoration. After the French occupation, Giuseppe Valadier restored the palazzo that became the property of the Italian state in 1871. Currently it houses the Museo di Roma whose collection is devoted to the history of the city with a focus on the 16th to the 19th centuries.

Pasquino is named for a tailor for whose shop it served as a doorstop. The name is the origin of the term pasquinade, referring to irreverent satires posted anonymously aimed at prominent public figures and critical of the papacy. The statue is a fragment of a sculpture group of Menelaus holding the dead Patroklos, more commonly seen in the copy in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Piazza della Signoria, Florence. Turn left at the statue to walk into Piazza Navona for the start of Tour 8.
