Chapter Twenty-Nine

By the time they arrived at Haynes’ office, Sean had trouble keeping his eyes open. The flight back from Los Angeles had been as uncomfortable as the one there. Frankie had flown the plane perfectly, so he really had no complaints. But he did have a slight quirk. Not one to sit twiddling his thumbs while another had control of his safety, Sean swore that he’d sign up for pilot’s lessons as soon as they’d closed this case against Phil Delaney. Even if Francesca was the one who sat in the pilot’s seat, he had to know he could step in at any time with the knowledge of what the hell to do, should the need arise.

While Frankie petted the jubilant, affectionate Macho-man in the back seat of the van Eddie’d sent to the airport to pick them up, Sean sat quietly. He had a lot on his mind. His thoughts meandered to Eddie, who they’d be meeting up with soon. Knowing his friend’s idiosyncrasies about protecting anyone he cared about, Sean had no doubt that he was being left in the dark for his own safety. In fact, his pal would put his own life on the line before placing Sean in danger. But, again, not knowing exactly what was going down gave him the willies.

They arrived soon enough, and Frankie had no trouble talking the secretary into looking after the pooch. Before the request had totally been put into words, she’d scooped the excited pup into her arms and her face lit up with glee. “Both Agent Haynes and Captain James are waiting for you. Just go right in.”

Haynes didn’t stand when they knocked and entered, unlike Eddie, who approached them to shake hands in welcome.

“Okay, let’s cut to the chase.” Haynes spoke first. “We’ve gone to a lot of trouble to give you a new identity, Agent Donovan, so don’t forget yourself and don’t take any risks.”

Sean wondered whether Haynes actually cared about Francesca, or was it the identity they’d worked so hard on and wanted to protect? Dislike for the pompous prick swelled. “What’s really important is that she’s under surveillance at all times.”

“Yes, that’s all been taken care of. We’ve sent in our best crew and they’ve hooked up special cameras everywhere in the hotel that’s open to the public, and also in her private quarters above. Though the previous owners, my brother’s family, already had a video system in place for the elevators and hallways that seemed sufficient, the ones in the lobby had been tampered with. They’ve now been replaced and we’ll be monitoring them around the clock. Also, we’ve given Agent Donovan a complete new background which will have to be memorised.” He handed her a memory stick. “Put that in the safe and don’t keep a copy on any of your devices. It’s for your eyes only.”

Again, Sean wanted to curl his hands around the scrawny neck of the insulting bastard. Instead he let Eddie’s stare intimidate him into keeping his mouth shut.
