Chapter 7

STAR STUFF

One of the first things you’re taught in astronomy is that the Sun is a star. Of course, to our eyes, the Sun and the stars look very different – so much so, you could imagine they’re totally unrelated. And for tens of thousands of years, people thought they were. But even though stars come in many varieties, there’s only one real difference between the Sun and stars, and that is distance. The Sun is on our cosmic doorstep, a mere 150 million kilometres away. If you could see it from 40 or 50 trillion kilometres, it would look just like a star.

The Sun is vitally important in keeping the whole Solar System running smoothly as well as sustaining life on Earth, but it’s also very conveniently located for astronomers. If you want to learn about stars and how they work, why not check out the one parked at the centre of the Solar System? And that is what we will do.
