CHAPTER FIVE

Slowly, the noise of the cantina returned to what it had been when we arrived, and another wave of nausea crashed over me. But the darkness had gone.

“Lost a life, did you?” A gruff voice came from above me. “I watched the whole thing. You were poisoned. At least you hit a checkpoint first.”

I jerked away. “Why didn’t you do anything to keep me from being poisoned?”

“What could I do? You’d already been stabbed.”

I couldn’t think of an intelligent answer. We were both quiet for two beats.

Then, he said, “We need to get out of here before you lose any more lives... or lose the game entirely. Two lives isn’t enough to run the gauntlet between here and there.”

Still on all fours, I grunted, squeezed my eyes closed, and willed the room to stop spinning. A cold drink grazed my shoulder, the ice making a tinkling sound as it bumped the glass.

“Here, Kick. Take this,” the voice commanded.

I shoved it away. I didn’t want it. I didn’t want anything but Emma. “Why did they take her? I’m not Kick.”

The glass brushed my skin again.

“You may not know it yet,” he said. “But you can trust me, and I promise that they knew what they were doing when they took your daughter, Kick.”

“I’m not K—“ I stopped mid-sentence and sighed. I’d turned into a broken record. My protests didn’t change behavior. I raised my head.

A man crouched beside me. The cantina lights glinted off his dark skin, and his eyes burned with an intensity I didn’t understand. “I’ll help you get her back.”

I scowled, eyeing the drink then him. My throat hurt from the screaming. “Why would you do that?”

He wore a charcoal uniform and a black stocking cap, complete with utility vest. His character had stealth abilities, if I had to guess. Characters like that didn’t pop up for no reason.

He offered his hand. “They’re the same people that kidnapped Lazuli. My name is Harrison.”

Of course it was.

I ignored his hand, climbed to my feet by myself, and didn’t bother mentioning my name. Characters never listened. “Your partner?”

“Lazuli is my partner. She’s been waiting for you.”

Lazuli? The name from the quest sheet. “Why does she care about me?”

“She’s the scientist responsible for bringing the Space Dragons back from extinction.”

“Space Dragons?”

He grimaced. “She always gets onto me for calling them that. I meant Solar Dragons. Lazuli never forgot her best friend, Kick. She knew you’d come.”

“Stop it. Do you hear me? I’m not Kick. Call me Zee.”

The corner of his eye twitched, and the world around us seemed to hiccup. “Zee,” he said, drawing the single syllable out awkwardly.

My breath left me in a shuddering sigh. I hadn’t heard anybody say my name since we’d arrived, and the act of this one character doing it tripped a glitch. As much I needed to hear it, I wasn’t about to risk Emma for that.

He bumped my shoulder. “This is the only way to get her back.”

Maybe the game charted my hormones and body chemistry.
