CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
It didnât take long for them to reach an agreement. Heâd persuade Greig to take part. In return, theyâd both come away richer. If they happened to come away in one piece, then there was scope for future earnings, too. This could be the making of young Greig, Amanda had insisted. If things went well, and everyone played their part, this could very well set his family up for life.
There had been no more dangled legs or lascivious looks. Amanda had taken the hint, though sheâd have had to possess skin like a fucking rhino not to. The talk had been strictly business after Hoon shot her down, and ten minutes later she raised her voice to summon a couple of big lads in dark suits from the adjoining room.
Hoon had no idea if these were the bastards who had snatched him the night before. Not that it really mattered, as he intended to treat them all with the same level of contempt, regardless of the individual roles they might have played.
They were given their orders to give Hoon back his belongings, then escort him downstairs and call him a taxi, and each silently confirmed their understanding with a nod.
There was no physical contact until the door to Amandaâs hotel suite clunked closed behind them, then a hand slapped down onto Hoonâs shoulder and forcibly turned him to face along the corridor to the right.
There was something ape-like about the hand. The fingers were thick, but also disproportionately long. Hoon studied it almost admiringly for a few seconds, then met the eyes of the owner.
âYou like that, son?â
The guard, or henchman, or whatever the fuck his job title was, stared back at him, utterly impassive and devoid of all emotion, like a robot with skin.
âWhat?â
âYour hand,â Hoon said. He gave a little tilt of his head towards it. âYou like it? Because if you do, and you want to keep enjoying the benefits of ownership, I suggest you remove it from my shoulder ASA-fucking-P.â
The bear in the suit did not seem in the least bit concerned about the threat, despite Hoonâs boggle-eyed stare, and the vein that was throbbing on the side of his head.
âJust walk,â the other suited ape instructed, and he sent Hoon stumbling forward a few paces with a well-placed shove to the back.
Red flashed before Hoonâs eyes. He felt his stomach twist and his muscles drawing tight. The temptation to turn around and get stuck into these pricks was almost overwhelming, but he swallowed it down.
He was getting somewhere. He was getting closer to finding Caroline, he could feel it. He couldnât do anything to jeopardise that now.
âNo bother, lads,â he said, forcing a smile that was mostly clenched teeth. He looked back at them. âWhatâs your names by the way?â
âShut the fuck up,â the first man barked. âAnd keep walking.â
âNo bother,â Hoon said again. âYou donât feel like sharing, thatâs fine. But I need to call you something, so how aboutâ¦?â He stole another look at them both as they plodded along the corridor.
