Twelve: Ghost with a Gun

I kept quiet and let him talk.

“It never got very serious. We met through a mutual client, and I feel the only reason Judy went out with me was because she thought I had money. That seemed to be her one goal in life.”

“Which she managed to do with her ex, at least in property,” I put in.

He nodded. “Once she found out I was just a regular guy trying to make ends meet, she turned really mean and hateful. She accused me of being bogus, not really doing anything with all of my ‘fancy electrical gadgets’,” he told me, using air quotes.

I let him talk.

“I should have suspected something when she continued to show me pictures of diamonds and suggested we go on fancy trips and cruises. Finally, I told her I couldn’t afford something like that. That’s when she called me a grifter, taking people’s money under the pretense of helping with their spiritual needs?”

I could tell that hurt both on a personal and professional level.

He swallowed hard, took a moment to get his emotions under control. Looking out the window and then back at me. “Please believe me. I fell head over heels in love with Chris the moment we met. And I think she felt the same thing for me. She was - is - the total opposite of Judy, loving, caring and giving. A truly gifted psychic.”

I felt the same about Chris just from the short time she’d been in my home. “And Judy was okay with this new arrangement?”

“A month later she married Romeo Stott,” Gene said. “What do you think?”

I shook my head as thoughts of my own ex-wife, already married to someone else, threatened to sneak into my thoughts.

“I think she had him on the string while we were dating,” Gene added.

“Is...was Judy as gifted a psychic as Chris?” I asked.

Gene shook his head. “Not really. She just didn’t have the heart that Chris has.”

I thought about that for a moment.

“She finally let me talk her into trying to contact Judy’s spirit last night,” Gene said and shook his head sadly.

How could I explain how I already knew about the veil that would keep Judy trapped until her murder was solved. I kept my mouth shut. Maybe it would help Chris if she thought she could reach her sister somehow.

“I’m guessing that didn’t work out well,” I said.

“She got no response and that seemed to affect her more than the murder. I won’t ask her to try that again.”

We chatted a while longer while I dug into my lunch.

“Aren’t you going to eat?” I asked when I noted that he had hardly touched anything on his plate.

He shook his head. “Some kind of stomach bug hit me this morning. I’ve been sick as a dog since I drank my morning coffee.”

That explained his pale coloring and trembling hands. I truly liked Gene but had no choice but to keep him on my list of suspects. For now, that list included three men who all had motive, means and opportunity.
