Chapter 12
The mice, needless to say, followed me home. There, I found Betty and Karen leaning over the bassinet, watching Gisela sleep.
âHowâs the baby?â I asked quietly.
Betty beamed. âSheâs just a little ray of sunshine, is what she is, kid. You did good with that one.â
âWhy, thank you.â
âYouâre welcome.â
I stopped and the line of mice jumped atop one another and formed a pyramid.
âWhy are Hesterâs rodents with you?â she asked sourly.
âOh, them.â I laid my purse on the table. âI donât really know. Found them waiting outside Familiar Place for me, and theyâve been following me ever since.â
âWell, they need to unfollow you.â She held out her hand and opened a palm. A broom appeared. My grandmother snatched it up. âMice are unsanitary. Theyâll make the baby sick.â
Karen came over. âWhatâs all this talk about mice? Eek,â she screeched like a hawk. âPepper, what are you doing with those mice?â
I sighed. âThey followed me. They seem pretty trained.â
âYou canât have mice around my little Gisela,â Karen argued. âTheyâll make her sick.â
âThatâs exactly what I said,â Betty added triumphantly. âTold her we better get those rodents out of here.â
My heart broke for them. âBut they donât have a home. Where are they going to go?â
âTheyâre gonna go out and be field mice like theyâre supposed to. Now git!â
With that, Betty charged forward with the broom. The mice dropped out of the pyramid and scattered across the floor.
âNow theyâre everywhere,â Karen cried.
âIâll get âem,â Betty called out. âDonât you worry!â
She aimed the bristled end at one of the creatures. Betty corralled it toward the sink, where it disappeared into a crack in the cabinetry. She whirled around and spotted another one alone in the middle of the floor, its body quivering.
âNow Iâve got you, you mouse. Pepper, open the back door.â
âBetty, honestly, I donât think theyâre going to harm anything.â
âJust do as I say,â she snapped.
Deciding it was best not to argue, I headed for the door and opened it. Betty looked like a bull with her head down and the broom lowered. I was waiting for her to scrape her feet against the tile floor. But remarkably, she didnât do that.
She charged at the mouse, who shook for half a second before heading for the open door.
âAha! Iâve got you,â Betty sang victoriously.
But right as they neared the threshold, the mouse veered to the left and headed into the living room, disappearing under the couch.
âSon of a gun,â Betty protested. âFine. We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way.â
âI think youâve been doing it the hard way,â I murmured.
She shot me an angry look.
I shrugged. âI mean, what youâve been doing doesnât look all that easy. Youâve been chasing the mice with a broom.â
Betty pushed up her sleeves. âNow weâre gonna use a little magic.â
âProbably what you shouldâve done in the first place,â I commented.
âKid, if you donât start keeping your opinions to yourself, youâre gonna be in trouble.â
I made a motion of swiping my hand over my mouth and throwing away the key.
