Chapter 23
~ Memories ~
I sat on my bed contemplating my fatherâs story. I didnât have the heart to tell him at the time, but Iâd known that he wasnât my real father since I was young. I know that sounds horrible, but I was smart enough to figure it out by the time I was twelve. My mother married Jason about six months after I was born in a very small service. I did the math. It doesnât take a rocket scientist to figure it out, especially once you factor in the lack of similarities between Jason and me. Iâd asked my mother about it one day when we were driving home from town.
âMom, you would never lie to me, right?â Talk about a loaded question coming from a twelve-year-old.
âI havenât yet, sweetheart, as long as you donât count Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy as lies.â She grinned.
âWho is my real father?â I blurted out my question.
My mother looked at me bewildered. She bit her lip as she slowly pulled our car off the side of the road. She calmly put the car in park and continued to stare straight ahead out the windshield. I could see the gears turning in her brain, trying to find the right words to say to me.
She turned toward me, speaking in her usual soft voice, âHailee, how did you know?â
âI donât know, Mom. I know that you guys got married six months after I was born. I just kind of figured it out.â
âWell, youâre right, sweetheart. Jason isnât your biological father. Did you know that I wasnât supposed to be able to have children?â
I shook my head.
âYou were my miracle, you know. My first love, your biological father, he got himself into some serious trouble and had to leave us. He had upset some powerful people and the only way for us to be safe was for us to separate.â Her voice thickened and began to crack as she choked back her emotions on the subject.
âDo you know where he is?â
âNo, honey. Iâm sorry. I donât. I know this must be hard for you to understand, but it was our only choice to keep you safe.â
I nodded. âI just wish that I could know him, thatâs all.â
She nodded. âI know. Maybe one day things will be different, but for now it has to be like this. I promised Jason I would never tell you, so please donât say a word to him. You always deserve the truth.â
âOkay, Mama. I wonât say anything.â For a twelve-year-old, I was very compliant, but I was happy with my family and Jason, even if he wasnât my real father.
A slight knock interrupted my trip down memory lane.
âWhat are you doing up here all by yourself?â Seth questioned as he stood in the doorway of my bedroom.
I shrugged. âIâm not in the mood for visitors.â
âI wonât be long.â He pushed his way into the room.
âBy the way, weâre meeting in my fatherâs study tonight.â I moved to look out the window.
