Sophie told Mr. DiLoretto that of course she would help Fiona, starting the next day. But late that afternoon, when she was watching Zeke, the other answers she could have given flipped through her head like radio stations. She put Zeke to work coloring in his new Spider-Man coloring book and listened to them all in her head.

Fiona took the leading role that always belonged to Sophie, and now she was supposed to help Fiona play it right?

She’s not gonna let me help her! She thinks she knows everything about acting because she read something on the Internet.

And what if Sophie did help her? Vincent would say he was the director, even though that had always been Sophie’s job too.

Sophie hung off the chair by the fireplace with her head upside down. Maybe she’d missed something in what Dr. Peter said. Being the best servant on the planet wasn’t working out quite the way she’d expected.

Johanna Van Raggs picked up the broom and attacked the hearth with it. Dust and ashes flew, but she didn’t care. Let Leona Artalini clean it up. Johanna wasn’t HER servant anyway.

Johanna swung the broom hard across the stones. The Master, Jesus, said whoever wants to become great among them must be a servant. If that was true, she must be the greatest by now. What else had he said?

Johanna frowned as she swept harder and tried to remember. It used to be so easy to think when Mister David had been there, quietly painting in the corner. She could almost imagine him there, creating the smallest of details with his brush …

She shook her head, scolding herself. There was no time to long for him now. I must find a way to get that evil Leona — whatever her name is — to give me back my rightful place, she thought. I was never treated this way before. I don’t deserve it!

She gave the hearth a resounding smack with the broom and coughed until her eyes were streaming. “I’m trying so hard to be good!” she cried. “But I feel like a slave — to everybody!”

The cottage door slammed —

Sophie jumped and dropped the broom. It fell into a layer of ashes that stretched across the hearth and onto the rug.

“What happened in here?” Lacie said from the family room doorway.

That wasn’t the worst of it. Daddy stood next to her, only he wasn’t looking at the mess on the floor. His eyes were riveted to the wall, where the real worst of it was happening. Zeke was putting the finishing touches on a spiderweb he’d drawn up there with a red marker.

This, Sophie decided, would be an excellent time to be the servant. Heart pounding, she started for the kitchen. “I’ll clean it up,” she said.

“Stop!” Lacie and Daddy said in stereo.

Sophie froze.

“You’ll track it all over the house,” Daddy said. “Lace, go get some — ”

“I’m on it,” Lacie said.

“And take Z-Boy with you.”

“Sophie said it was okay!” Zeke wailed as Lacie hoisted him over her shoulder.
