Chapter Twelve

Ghosts

“You have to pay an extra fee to see the crew quarters.” Granny scans her museum brochure. “There’s a paranormal tour that goes to that part of the ship. Otherwise, it’s closed to the public.”

“Let’s do it!” I clap my hands. “You gotta spend money to make money.”

“Now wait a minute, young lady,” Granny chuckles. “It costs a pretty penny to get into this place as it is. I don’t know if I want to fork out more money for something extra.”

“Come on, Granny! We’ve gotta go there!” Cole pulls on her sleeve. “Mr. Thomas said there are hiding spaces where the treasure could be.”

“We’ll see after we view the other exhibits we’ve paid for,” says Granny. “Anyone need to take a restroom break?”

All three of us shake our heads.

“I’m going to slip into the ladies’ room. Stay right here. I’ll be back in a minute.”

As we wait, I cross my arms and tap my foot, and Chloe scrolls through her phone. Cole explores an army jeep exhibit.

I’m starting to feel anxious. Seeing World War II fighter planes and learning about the ship’s history is neat, but we’re still no closer to discovering our treasure. We need to search this ship from top to bottom.

“I’ve got to convince Granny to let us do that paranormal tour,” I grumble.

“Uh, Sophie…” Chloe taps my arm. “I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.”

“Why not?” I frown. “Don’t you want to find the treasure?”

“Yes, but do you know what paranormal means?” She gives me a look.

“A special plane?” I shrug.

“No,” she answers. “A ghost.”

“Huh?” I wrinkle my brow, confused.

“The USS Lexington is haunted! Read this.” She shows me an article she pulled up on her phone. “People have heard voices and screams on this ship, and some have seen actual ghosts!”

“How can this be true?” I put my hand on my hips.

“I dunno,” Chloe answers. “But I’m not trying to find out, even for more shopping money.”

I sigh. At every turn, something is standing in the way of our treasure. But I agree that messing with ghosts isn’t a good idea. If I’d known the USS Lexington was haunted, I don’t think I would have wanted to come here.

“Ready for the next part of our tour?” Granny rejoins us. “How about joining the 3-D show?”

Cole bounces up behind her. “Can I get a model plane in the gift shop? After that, we can go to the crew quar…”

“Did you know that people have seen ghosts on this ship?” I cut him off.

“It’s a tall tale.” Granny shakes her head. “The Japanese thought the USS Lexington had sunk four different times. But the ship kept returning, so it was nicknamed, ‘The Blue Ghost.’”

“We read that people saw ghosts in the crew quarters,” says Chloe.

“I ain’t ‘fraid of no ghosts!” Cole answers. “They can’t stop me from looking for my treasure.”

“Well, I am!” I answer. “We better stick to the main areas and try to find our clues around here.”

“Yeah,” Chloe agrees. “I don’t want to go to any place where there might be paranormals.
