I saw several of the Chinese on their knees, with their hands raised towards heaven, begging for mercy; but none was shown to them; all were served alike. Their tents were broken down and burnt, their pockets emptied, and their persons ill used and beaten with sticks, stones, or whatever came to hand. One Chinaman had an eye gouged out, and several were so severely handled that death will probably ensue.21
