Chapter Thirteen

Lark sank down to the sofa. Zain...he'd left him. He'd walked out the door, asking for forgiveness, but not diverting from his chosen path. Were Zain's intentions really good? Was he truly trying to stop the threat to Karrick as quickly as possible? Or was it the want of that Goddess cursed coin driving him? He couldn't help but think it was a mix of both.

But which need was strongest in Zain's heart? That's what he wanted to know. If it was to protect Karrick, then Zain already had his forgiveness. If it was the coin ruling strong, then he didn't know how he could be with him again. Not after all they'd done, the words, the promises Zain had spoken to him. Therein was the problem, though. He would probably never know the truth.

Zain said it was for Karrick's safety, but he also seemed pretty damn adamant about getting paid.

“Lark?”

Lark glanced up at Bryson's soft call.

Bryson offered a sympathetic smile to him. “If you need some time to yourself, you're welcome to stay. We can tell Karrick everything and before we ride out to Moondale, we'll come for you.”

“You won't have to. I'll come to you at the castle. I think...I just need a few moments. I'll ride out in a bit.”

Bryson went to him and wrapped Lark in his arms. “It's going to be all right. Zain...his intentions are good. It's about more than the coin for him. If I didn't believe that, I wouldn't have let him take Spirit again.”

Lark hugged Bryson tight, needing the comfort and closeness.

“Hearing that from you makes me feel better.”

“I'm glad for that.” Bryson drew back and kissed Lark on the forehead. “We're going to get Thunder hitched up to the wagon and head out. We'll see you soon.”

“I'll be right behind you lads.”

Bryson gave him another smile and turned to leave through the door to Terra with Garrett. Wynn sailed through, and Bryson glanced back to Lark one more time before closing the door.

Lark stood in the center of the room, alone. But he felt more alone than his friends being gone. It was a loneliness deep inside, a sense of loss. He'd thought more than once Zain had broken his heart, but those times were only shadows compared to the hurt he experienced now. It was deep and powerful, so much so he could feel it physically. He'd told Bryson his words comforted him, but it wasn't true.

Zain had left him to continue his ways. And if he was doing it already, only three days after his declaration of leaving the trade, then who was to say he wouldn't do it again? And again. And again. It's who Zain was. He knew that, and he'd accepted it when he gave himself to Zain. Really, maybe he shouldn't be so upset.

This wasn't anything he shouldn't have expected.

And yet, he hadn't expected it. When Zain told him he was done with killing for coin, he believed him. As ridiculous as it
