1st Division, Intermediate Trench
In 1 Brigadeâs sector the 1st Black Watch left their trench at 4.15am. The covering barrage fell short, disorganising the advance, and then the German artillery joined in. Only a few men reached Intermediate Trench in the thick fog and they soon had to withdraw. General Strickland wanted to make another attempt at 2.45pm but a British heavy gun fired short and an exploding shell blocked the assembly trench. The 8th Berkshires reached Lancashire Sap, west of High Wood, as the smoke covering their left flank drifted across their front. They were then stopped by artillery and machine-gun fire.
